Mission

Job Description:

Reporting to the department head and the Medical Director, the hematologist is responsible for patients treated in the hematology unit. The physician performs duties in inpatient care, specialized outpatient clinics, the day hospital, and intra-hospital liaison services.

The hematologist is responsible for their clinical practice in hematology. They work in collaboration with other medical specialists, primary care physicians, and the nursing staff.
They provide diagnostic and therapeutic care and follow-up for patients with benign and malignant hematological disorders. They also participate in the supervision of a resident in training, as appropriate.


Duties and Responsibilities:

• Care for patients hospitalized in the hematology unit. Patient care, maintenance of medical records, and providing information to families.
• Specialized hematology outpatient consultations.
• Follow-up care for patients treated in the hematology day hospital (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, transfusions, supportive care).
• Providing specialized hematology consultations for other departments within the institution.
• Active participation in weekly multidisciplinary meetings and oncology meetings.
• Collaborate with clinical laboratory, pathology, and medical imaging departments as part of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Participate in continuity of care and on-call duties according to the department’s schedule.
• Participate in the development and organization of hematology services within the institution.

Desired Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine degree, specialist in internal medicine, with a specific qualification in hematology in accordance with the ministerial decree of October 18, 2002. Must have a Belgian INAMI number
• Must have a BCE number
• Ability to listen, communicate effectively, and coordinate care.

Description of the Hematology Department

The Hematology Department at CHR Verviers is part of a regional general hospital with 430 accredited beds, recognized as a major provider of specialized care in eastern Belgium. It is part of a leading hematology-oncology center offering a comprehensive oncology care program that covers the entire diagnostic and therapeutic process, including an accredited radiation therapy department located directly on the hospital grounds. In particular, the CHR Verviers is the only center in eastern Belgium to offer a comprehensive oncology program combining medical oncology, hematology, radiation therapy, and clinical research within an integrated facility. It develops partnerships with other hospital providers, including university hospitals.

The hematology program covers all malignant and non-malignant conditions within the field and is delivered through specialized outpatient clinics, a 22-bed overnight inpatient unit, and a 24-bed day hospital unit, enabling modern and flexible patient care. The department also stands out for its commitment to developing home hospitalization, with particular expertise in the safe administration of cytostatic treatments in patients’ homes, thereby meeting new expectations regarding quality of life and access to care.

The medical team consists of five full-time hematologists who work closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, clinical biologists, pathologists, and the many allied health professionals involved in the care pathway. This structure fosters a dynamic multidisciplinary approach and collaborative decision-making for the most complex cases.

The department also benefits from a specialized nursing staff that includes, in particular, nurse coordinators and a data manager. This structure enables active participation in clinical, pharmaceutical, and academic studies, offering patients access to innovative treatments and providing physicians with a stimulating scientific and academic environment. For several years, CHR Verviers has been developing a recognized culture of clinical research, supported by a rigorous organization of multidisciplinary consultations and study protocols.

• Self-employed status
• Contract type: One-year fixed-term contract, to be reviewed thereafter for a permanent position.
• Schedule: 8 half-days per week—negotiable.
