The University Hospitals of Leuven (UZ Leuven) have approximately 2,000 beds and are recognized as a European center for cutting-edge medicine, medical innovation, academic research, and education.

The Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at UZ Leuven provides the full spectrum of care in the subspecialties of rhinology, otology, head and neck surgery, and oncology, serving both adults and children. As a tertiary, academic center, the department focuses on highly specialized care, often through multidisciplinary collaborations. A team of nine permanent medical staff members is responsible for clinical care and for the training of medical specialists and students. In addition, all staff members are involved in research projects within their respective areas of expertise.

The department is seeking to expand its team of permanent medical staff with a new colleague in the subdiscipline of otology and neurotology.

In the field of otology and neurotology, the department offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. UZ Leuven is a national referral center for congenital hearing loss and for cochlear, middle ear, and bone-conduction implants in both children and adults. Otogenetic diagnostics are performed. UZ Leuven is part of the European Reference Network for rare craniofacial and ENT disorders (ERN CRANIO), which also includes congenital otological anomalies and congenital hearing loss. In addition to the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss in all its aspects, the department focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders in children and adults, the diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment of tinnitus, middle ear surgery, and the treatment of lateral skull base tumors in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery.

In terms of scientific research, there is close collaboration with the Laboratory for Experimental Otorhinolaryngology (ExpORL) in the Department of Neurosciences at KU Leuven and with industry. The subspecialty of otology is involved in multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and clinical studies and is at the forefront of various new developments within the field.

How do you push boundaries?

You will oversee clinical activities within the otology and neurotology care program, with a focus on middle ear surgery and vestibular disorders at UZ Leuven and its partner hospitals.
You will support existing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations and expand them as needed.
You will contribute to the training of medical residents.
You participate in scientific research.

You put the patient first and are able to tailor your communication and information provision to the patient’s needs.

What do you need to qualify?

You have earned your degree as an ENT-Head and Neck Surgery specialist or are in the final stage of your training as an ENT physician.
You have an interest in and/or experience with the specific treatment of otological conditions, or you are willing to further develop your expertise through specific fellowships if necessary
Experience and/or a Ph.D. are not required, but are a plus. To build a career at UZ Leuven, we expect you to demonstrate an interest in scientific research and a commitment to education in addition to your clinical work.
Proficiency in Dutch (minimum B2 level) is required for communication with patients and colleagues.
